Steve W. Cole, Ph.D. Vice President, Research, HopeLab Redwood City, California
Steve Cole is responsible for HopeLab’s research programs and oversees the HopeLab research staff in ongoing studies to evaluate the effectiveness of HopeLab’s interventions. He is also responsible for ensuring that HopeLab’s interactive technology solutions are based on the latest medical and psychological information available. In addition to his responsibilities at HopeLab, Steve is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is an associate member of the UCLA Molecular Biology Institute and the Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology of the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. Steve received his Ph.D. in Psychology in 1992 from Stanford University and his B.A. with highest honors, in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a frequent presenter at research meetings and the author of more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Ralph DiClemente, Ph.D. Professor of Public Health, Emory University Atlanta, Georgia
Ralph J. DiClemente is Charles Howard Candler Professor of Public Health and Associate Director, Emory/Atlanta Center for AIDS Research. He holds concurrent appointments as Professor in the School of Medicine, the Department of Pediatrics, in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, and Immunology, and the Department of Medicine, in the Division of Infectious Diseases, and the Department of Psychiatry. He was most recently Chair, Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University. Ralph was trained as a Health Psychologist at the University of California San Francisco where he received his PhD in 1984 after completing an MSPH in Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health and his undergraduate degree at the City University of New York. He is a recognized expert on the development and evaluation of prevention programs tailored to African-American adolescents and young adults. He is the author of more than 200 publications.

Fred Dillon Director of Product Development, HopeLab Redwood City, California
Fred Dillon provides planning and project management leadership in the development of HopeLab’s innovative products to improve the health and quality of life of young people with chronic illness. He leads interdisciplinary teams of HopeLab staff, vendors and external collaborators to vet, develop and refine potential innovative products consistent with HopeLab’s strategic plan and program emphases. Fred works closely with HopeLab’s Research unit to ensure that HopeLab product development is linked with high-quality research and that HopeLab customers are involved every step of the way. Fred has over 12 years of public policy, communications and project management experience. Most recently he served as Deputy Executive Director for Policy and Communications at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF), where he oversaw all aspects of the agency’s government affairs and communications efforts. Fred is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied Social Welfare and Public Policy.

Ellen H. Goldberg, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus, University of New Mexico
Ellen H. Goldberg was President of the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) from 1996 to 2003, where she was responsible for overseeing the institute’s financial and scientific operations. She coordinated the SFI Consortium: Increasing Human Potential, a longitudinal study of cognitive, behavioral and mental development in babies and preadolescents. Ellen was a faculty member and administrator at the University of New Mexico, where she is currently Professor Emeritus. She has been recognized nationally for her work, having received an NIH Research Career Development Award and NIH research grants throughout her career. She served as a Founding Board Member of HopeLab and is currently on the Board of the MIND Institute and the Advisory Board of the Investment Company of America. Ellen received her Ph.D. in genetics from Cornell University Medical College, receiving the "outstanding dissertation award" in 1971 for her work on cell surface differentiation antigens.

Matt Marsh Founder and Director, firsthand London, England
Matt Marsh is founder and director of firsthand, a user-centered innovation consultancy working in the public, social and commercial sectors. His passion is to design products and services that genuinely benefit people‘s lives. Previously the head of user-centered research at IDEO San Francisco, studio director at IDEO London and marketing director for IDEO Europe, Matt has brought design innovation to countless award-winning projects. including an MDEASilver (1999), D&AD Yellow Pencil (1997), IDEA Gold (1996) and IDSA Gold (1993). Matt is an expert in observing and analyzing user behavior then translating it into meaningful, realistic and effective opportunities for clients as broad as Apple Computers, Becton Dickinson, BMW, Charities Aid Foundation, Community Action Network, Eli Lilly, GM Hughes, Kodak, London Underground, Medtronic, Microsoft, Nanomaterials, Nokia, Reuters, Royal Mail, Sega, Sony, Whirlpool and Xerox.

Emily Murphy, Ph.D. Childhood Obesity Researcher, West Virginia University
Emily Murphy holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology and specializes in research related to the impact of physical activity on cardiovascular risk in childhood obesity. She is involved in the coordination of several statewide and local interventions focused on bettering the health of West Virginia children. Emily also works with the Coronary Artery Risk Detection in Appalachian Communities Project (CARDIAC), a cardiovascular risk screening project that is available to all fifth grade children in West Virginia. She serves as the Co-Director of the West Virginia Games for Health with Dr. Linda Carson, a series of statewide projects that have utilized Dance Dance Revolution, a total body video game, to enhance the physical activity levels of children, as well as monitor the health benefits of active video game playing. She is faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Carrie Ellis Williams Director of Field Management, KaBOOM! Washington, D.C.
Carrie Ellis Williams joined the KaBOOM! Team in 2005 as the Director of Field Management. Every year, her team oversees the planning and installation of over 225 community-built playspaces throughout North America. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Carrie spent her childhood enjoying boating, camping, and hiking through the eucalyptus forest behind her parents’ house. Through all of these adventures, Carrie developed an appreciation for creative play and imaginative learning. She attended Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga., where she earned her B.A. Following this, Carrie taught middle school English and Mass Media in Los Angeles through the Teach for America program. Carrie then pursued a master’s degree in Communication Management from the University of Southern California. Once she graduated, she headed to Washington, DC where she worked for several years in different capacities on the national staff of Teach for America.

Daniel Winter Student London, England
Daniel J. Winter was born in Harrow, England on 16 September 1992. He currently attends Cardinal Wiseman School and his favourite subjects are Religious Education, Drama, Music and Media Studies. He is also learning to play the guitar. Since he was small, he has been making films. In recent years he’s experimented with stop-frame animation (check out his films on YouTube). At school Daniel is in a group promoting ‘Recycling,’ and he recently made a film highlighting the issue of litter in the school playground. His ‘Favourite things’ include: Films -- Eternal Sunshine, Back to The Future, My Neighbour Totoro; Music -- David Bowie, Daft Punk, Placebo; Books -- The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the Harry Potter series; Games -- Super Mario Galaxy, Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda.

Sophia Yen, MD, MPH Pediatrician, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, California
Sophia Yen is a Taiwanese-American pediatrician who specializes in adolescents. She works at Stanford's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in the Teen clinic. She has a B.S. in Biology from MIT and an MD from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Her pediatric residency was at Children’s Hospital Oakland, adolescent medicine fellowship at UCSF, and Masters in Public Health in Maternal and Child Health from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Yen founded the N.CA AAP Pediatric Obesity Committee and the POIG (Pediatric Obesity Interest Group) email list comprised of 120+ pediatricians, endocrinologists, Ph.D.s, nutritionists, medical students, and some community members interested in preventing and treating pediatric obesity in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her research interests include adolescent obesity treatment using technological gadgets and emergency contraception perceptions and preferences by adolescents. She is also a strong advocate for obesity treatment and prevention, reproductive rights and adolescent reproductive rights.
