Lucy Bernholz, PhD

Lucy Bernholz is the Founder and President of Blueprint Research & Design, a strategy consulting firm that helps philanthropic individuals and institutions achieve their missions. She is also the publisher of Philanthropy2173, an award-winning blog about the business of giving, and she serves as Executive Producer of The Giving Channel on Fora.tv. Lucy is a noted analyst of the philanthropic industry and has published articles in the trade and general press, edited collections, and scholarly journals. Her most recent book, Creating Philanthropic Capital Markets: The Deliberate Evolution, was published in 2004. She has a B.A. from Yale University and a M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University.


Fred Dillon
Director of Product Development, HopeLab

Fred Dillon provides planning and project management leadership in the development of HopeLab’s innovative products to improve the health and quality of life of young people with chronic illness. He leads interdisciplinary teams of HopeLab staff, vendors and external collaborators to vet, develop and refine potential innovative products consistent with HopeLab’s strategic plan and program emphases. Fred works closely with HopeLab’s Research unit to ensure that HopeLab product development is linked with high-quality research and that HopeLab customers are involved every step of the way. Fred has over 12 years of public policy, communications and project management experience. Most recently he served as Deputy Executive Director for Policy and Communications at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF), where he oversaw all aspects of the agency’s government affairs and communications efforts. Fred is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied Social Welfare and Public Policy.


Noah Falstein
Game Designer and Producer, The Inspiracy

Noah Falstein has been developing games professionally since 1980 - and playing them all his life. He began his career working as one of the early employees at LucasArts Entertainment, The 3DO Company, and Dreamworks Interactive and is known for his contributions to games including Sinistar, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. For the last 11 years he has been a freelance game designer and producer for his company, The Inspiracy. Increasingly Noah’s work has focused on serious games for clients including Shell Oil, DARPA, Federation of American Scientists, Cisco, Medical Cyberworlds, and HopeLab, among many others. But he still makes time for pure entertainment titles and is co-designer of the upcoming Mata Hari adventure game for DTP.


Debra Lieberman, Ph.D.
Communication Researcher, University of California, Santa Barbara

Debra Lieberman is a communication researcher at the Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Her research focuses on processes of learning and behavior change with interactive media, with special interests in interactive games, health media, and children's media. At UCSB, Debra directs the Health Games Research national program, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to advance the design and effectiveness of interactive games intended to improve health. Debra has published widely and she consults for health organizations, education agencies, and media and technology companies to help design and evaluate interactive media for entertainment, learning, and health promotion.


Ann Maloney, MD
Research Psychiatrist, Maine Medical Center Research Institute
Scarborough, Maine

Ann E. Maloney is a Research Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. She is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, her alma mater. Her training in psychiatry, child psychiatry and research methodology was at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where she trained with Lin Sikich, MD. Ann trained in psychobiology of neurodevelopmental disorders and treatments. In addition to research of middle school youth and physical activity (with DDR and with IN the Groove/Generation Fit), she works in the Department of Pediatrics as a consultant on Countdown to a Healthy ME, a program for overweight youth and families. She is working on the Maine Youth Overweight Collaborative and the "Let's Go" campaign for pediatric and family health locally.


Ernie Medina, Jr., DrPH

For the last 14 years, Ernie Medina has worked as a preventive care specialist at Beaver Medical Group, focusing on lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and stress. In 1999, he helped supervise the creation of their Kid Fit program. In light of the growing pediatric obesity epidemic, Ernie is collaborating with California State University of San Bernardino and Loma Linda University to conduct research on the effectiveness and viability of "exertainment" as a tool in the fight of this epidemic. He is also the CEO and co-founder of XRtainment Zone LLC, a first-of-a-kind family fitness and wellness center combining the latest in exergaming equipment and professional programming for total wellness in the family. Ernie earned both his Master's of Public Health (Health Promotion emphasis) and Doctorate in Public Health (emphasis in preventive care) from Loma Linda University. He is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Health Promotion at Loma Linda University's School of Public Health. In his personal time, most of Ernie's extracurricular activities involve kids.


Chris Murchison, M.Ed.

Chris Murchison is Vice President of Staff Development, Learning and Innovation at HopeLab. He is responsible for cultivating and supporting an agency culture that values learning, innovation and informed, strategic risk taking. Chris is a human resources professional with over 15 years experience in the public and private sectors. He was previously with Charles Schwab Corporation in San Francisco from 2000 to 2004 where he was Director of Talent Management and Development after first serving as Senior Manager, Schwab Technology Education. His experience also includes 10 years at the University of California, Berkeley where he was Academic Program Coordinator from 1991 to 1996 and Manager of the Staff Internship Program from 1996 to 2000. Chris received his B.A., with honors, in Biology from Earlham College in 1985 and his M.Ed. Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration, with honors, from the University of Vermont in 1988.


Miriam Nelson, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Nutrition, Tufts University
Boston, Massachusetts

Miriam Nelson is director of the John Hancock Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition and associate professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. She is also a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. For the past 19 years, Miriam has been principal investigator of studies on exercise and nutrition. During this time she was named a Brookdale National Fellow, a prestigious award given annually. She was also awarded a Bunting Fellowship at the Mary Ingraham Bunting Institute at Radcliffe College.

Miriam is the author of seven international best-sellers, including Strong Women Stay Young. In addition, she is a LLuminari health expert.


Mariah Tate

Mariah Tate is 16 years old and a junior at Santa Fe High School in Edmond, Oklahoma. She is an active member in her school’s French club and national honor society. She works at a day care and baby-sits often. Her interests are friends and music. She tutors at an elementary school. In the future she hopes to be an elementary school teacher.

Austin Wade is a seventh grader at Citrus Hills Intermediate School in Corona, California. He is a member of two bands at his school. He plays the tenor saxophone in both the Jazz Band and the Advanced Band. His favorite academic subject at school is math. He tries to do as much mental math whenever possible. In his spare time, he likes to play video games. Austin and his brother went to the State level of History Day with their group documentary on video games. He loves to cook and enjoys going hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. Austin is a member of the Boy Scouts and has obtained the First Class rank.
